The Heart of Appalachia and Cleveland, Virginia

Appalachia is known for its winding roads, rolling hills and mountains and for the strength of the people who live here. This is the beating heart of coal-production in the United States and the legacy of that industry pervades the culture and history of this region. That history is preserved at the Cleveland History and Heritage Museum.

The museum is an intimate facility located at Cleveland’s old elementary school. In pictures and artifacts, it tells the history of this town, its people and, thereby, the history of the Appalachian region as a whole. These are a people who are famous for enduring some of the most brutal working conditions possible while down in the mines and for creating some of the nation’s most beloved music; the fast fiddling and banjo picking of Appalachia being indelibly imprinted on the American imagination and an undeniably important part of our musical and artistic heritage as a nation.
